Earlier this year I started teaching drawing workshops for first year students. It made me reflect on my time at art school and because I’m such a hoarder I still have all of my work. I was most surprised by how interesting I still found my ideas and drawings from 10 years ago.
This was part of a third year project. It started from a trip to Woburn Safari Park and ended in a children’s book. Some very Klassen-esque rocks! The photocopier was one of my favourite tools at uni. All of these elements weren’t stuck down but were separate layers all spiral bound together. The main thing I did was enlarge my drawings. A set of drawings about an explorer. A fun selection of monoprints A painted background with moveable figures. The final part of this project is a hand-bound lino print book of animals stacking up on a car. It’s a very basic counting book inspired by Enzo Mari’s beautiful book See-Saw. So by the end the animals would all be on top of your car. I need to search a little more to find the finished book. Whilst I’ve been back I’ve been making the most of having access to the print rooms again. But more on this another time ;-)
